The Gateway Experience is a series of audio-guided meditation exercises developed by Robert Monroe, founder of The Monroe Institute. The exercises are designed to help individuals explore and expand their consciousness, and to facilitate access to altered states of awareness.
The Gateway Experience consists of six "waves," each of which consists of several audio exercises that are intended to be experienced in a specific order. The exercises are designed to gradually lead the listener into deeper and deeper states of relaxation and altered consciousness.
The exercises use a variety of techniques, including guided visualization, binaural beats, and hemispheric synchronization (using sounds to stimulate both sides of the brain), to help the listener enter into altered states of awareness. Some people report having profound experiences during the Gateway Experience, such as feeling a sense of oneness with the universe or having out-of-body experiences.
The Monroe Institute offers residential programs where participants can experience the Gateway Experience under the guidance of trained facilitators, as well as home-study programs where participants can listen to the audio exercises on their own. The institute also offers advanced programs for those who have completed the Gateway Experience and wish to continue exploring expanded states of consciousness.
