The primary function of the U.S. federal government is to provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for its citizens. This is outlined in the preamble to the U.S. Constitution, which states that the purpose of the government is to "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity."

To fulfill these functions, the federal government has various powers and responsibilities, including maintaining a strong military, regulating interstate commerce, providing for national infrastructure, conducting foreign policy, administering social welfare programs, and enforcing civil rights and other laws. The government also collects taxes to fund these activities and provides oversight to ensure that these activities are carried out in the public interest.
