The Florida Senate has passed a bill targeting undocumented immigration, which has been a priority for Governor Ron DeSantis, with the proposal requiring private employers, public agencies, contractors, and subcontractors with over 25 employees to use the E-Verify system to test the legal status of their employees. The bill, which was passed on a party-line vote of 27-10, has been softened from its original language, with Democrats arguing that immigration is a federal issue and that the states have no reason or authority to regulate it.
Other measures in the bill would restrict Florida counties and municipalities from providing funds to any person, entity, or organization to issue community IDs to individuals without proof of lawful presence in the United States, ban the use of legally-issued out-of-state driver’s licenses regardless of immigration status, and provide $12 million in taxpayer dollars to fund the “Unauthorized Alien Transportation Program."
